AMHERST, MASS – Junior Reed Liset (Dover, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire men’s outdoor track and field set a University of Massachusetts facility record in the discus (151-0) and garnered victories in both the hammer and discus to lead the Wildcats to 174 points and win at the UMass Invitational on Saturday.
            The Wildcats cruised to the meet victory by compiling 174 points. UMass was second (137) and University of Maine notched third (78). Boston College placed fourth (68) points out of seven competitors.
            Liset posted a phenomenal day in all three throwing events. He set the record in the discus (151-0) and also captured first in the hammer (169-11) along with placing fourth overall in the shot put (43-1). Teammates Josh Edwards (Pelham, N.H.) recorded a second in the shot put (46-10.50) and Jeff Kaste (Atkinson, N.H.) tallied a third in shot put (44-6.50) to go along with a fourth place in the discus (129-11).
            Sophomore Matt Begley (Brookville, Md.) vaulted to a first place victory in the pole vault (14-7.25), while freshman William Brehm (Pembroke, N.H.) enjoyed an amazing day in the sprints by capturing first in the 200-meters (22.52) and second in the 100-meters (11.43). Freshman Cody Blake (Pembroke, N.H.) delivered a win in the 400-meter hurdles (55.51) and raced to a fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.17).
            Sophomore Spencer Shaw (Hampton, N.H.) leaped to a second place finish in the long jump (21-2.75), while Chris Morgan posted a second place finish in the javelin (182-3). In the distance events, graduate student Matt Russell (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) registered a third in the 3000m steeplechase (9:26.36) and Ben Danton (Francestown, N.H.) notched fourth place in the 1500-meters (4:00.01) to round out a spectacular day of performances after a week lay off.
            The Wildcats return to action next Saturday (April 21) at 12 noon to compete at the Dartmouth College Invitational.
