University of New Hampshire sophomore Spencer Shaw (Hampton, N.H.) won the long jump and contributed to a second place effort in the 4x400 relay team to lead the Wildcats to a strong showing at its season opening meet at the Husky Winter Carnival on Saturday.
            The Wildcats posted one first place finish, two second place finishes and four third place finishes. Shaw was the lone Wildcat to win an individual event as he recorded a leap of 22-6-.25 in the long jump. He also contributed to the second place 4x400 relay team (3:27.51) made up of Will Brenham, Cody Blake, and Brendan Post. Senior Robert Stiles (Southbury, CT) raced to a second place finish in the mile run (4:21:10), while Matt O’Connor (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) notched a third place (4:21.44).
            Travis Parker (Fairfax, Va.) and Ben Jenkins (Francestown, N.H.) placed third (1:07.13) and fourth (1:07.22) respectively in the 500 meters, while Rodolfo Crispin (Ridgewood, N.J.) registered a third place in the 1000 meters (2:35.35).
            UNH sophomore Jeff Kaste (Atkinson, N.H.) finished third in the weight throw (51-1.75) and junior Matthew Begley (Brookville, Md.) posted a fourth place in the pole vault (13-11.25).
            The Wildcats return to action on Saturday (Dec. 9) when they host the University of Maine at 11:30 at the Paul Sweet Oval in Durham, N.H.
