JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior John Prizzi (Wyckoff, N.J.) of the University of New Hampshire men's track and field team earned a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on day three of the NCAA Regional Meet on Friday evening at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium.
Prizzi took second place in his heat and earned fourth overall with a school-record mark of 8 minutes and 42.20 seconds. The 8:42.20 time breaks his own school-record mark of 8:47.30, which he recorded at Princeton University's Larry Ellis Invitational in April.
The fourth-place finish also automatically qualifies Prizzi for the NCAA Championships on June 12 at the University of Oregon. Prizzi will be the second member of the UNH track and field program to compete at the NCAA Championships during the 2013-14 school-year. Freshman All-American Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) of the women's squad competed in the mile race at the NCAA Championships during the indoor season.
Prizzi will be the first UNH athlete to participate at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since Ashlee Lathrop of the women's team competed in the hammer throw event during the 2010 outdoor season.
