BOSTON – Sophomore James Anderson (Melrose, Mass.) turned-in a first-place showing and four other Wildcats added runner-up finishes as the University of New Hampshire men's indoor track & field team kicked off the season at the Jay Carisella Invitational Saturday at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center.
Anderson got his season off to a great start as he came up victorious in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.94. The Wildcats claimed the top two spots in the event as junior Eric Stys (Stittville, N.Y.) finished runner-up at 1:57.85.
The Wildcats' 4x400 meter relay team also added a first-place finish with a time of 3:23.36.
Junior Kevin Greene (Silver Spring, Md.) finished runner-up in the mile, crossing the finish line in a time of 4:16.74. Sophomores Zachary Chabot (Manchester, N.H.) and Dean Bhatt (Woodbridge, Conn.) placed sixth and seventh in the event, respectively, at 4:19.24 and 4:19.81.
In the field, the Wildcats went one-two in the weight throw as George Jumpp (Manchester, N.H.) placed runner-up with a toss of 56-10.00 and senior Cameron Lyle (Plaistow, N.H.) took third at 53-11.75. Lyle also added a runner-up finish in the shot put with a toss of 48-01.25.
In the 500 meters, sophomore Andrew Albin (Bethel, Conn.) came up with a third-place finish as he crossed the finish line in a time of 1:06.40.
Sophomore Nicholas Sullivan (Newport, N.H.) placed fourth in the 200 meters in a time of 22.56.
Sophomore Isaiah Penn (Boston, Mass.) took fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 50.21. Senior Victor Adejuyigbe (Penacook, N.H.) finished fifth overall in the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.07, while freshman Brian Ferreira (Mansfield, Mass.) claimed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.69.
In the 3,000 meters, the distance trio of sophomore John Prizzi (Wycoff, N.J.) and junior Nathaniel Hathaway (Scarborough, Maine) and Joseph Jourdain (Hudson, N.H.) placed fifth though seventh, respectively, in times of 8:28.29, 8:34.18 and 8:38.51.
Junior Sean Leighton (Hampstead, N.H.) chipped in with a seventh-place finish in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:09.92. Freshman David Regan (Sandwich, Mass.) and senior Ethan Dionne (Nashua, N.H.) added a pair of top-10 finishes in the 1,000 meters as the duo placed seventh and eighth, respectively, at 2:39.19 and 2:41.18.
Back in the field, freshman Maxwell Brown (Waterville, Maine) took sixth in the triple jump at 42-00.75, while seniors Matthew Guarente (Saugus, Mass.) and Jason Guarente (Saugus, Mass.) went sixth and seventh in the high jump with matching leaps of 6-02.00.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, Dec. 7 when they host Maine in a heptathlon at 5 p.m. UNH then takes on Maine in dual-meet action on Saturday, Dec. 8 at noon.
