UNH FACES NATIONALLY-RANKED SAN FRANCISCO ON FRIDAY
BOSTON - With a goal in each of his first two matches at the forward position for the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team, senior Michael Card (Amherst, N.H.) has been named America East Co-Player of the Week by the conference office.
On Sept. 2 against Iona, with the Wildcats holding a 1-0 lead, Card corralled a pass from Chris Bennice (Scotia, N.Y.) and sent the ball into the lower right corner of the net in the 69th minute for the insurance goal. Two days later, in the 23rd minute against Quinnipiac, Card took a pass from Eric Masi (York, Maine), drove past his defender, and sent a shot into the lower left corner of the net to notch what would become the winning goal.
Before this season, Card played in both the midfield and back positions for the Wildcats. Last year he scored his first career goal against Maine and saw action in 17 matches, including 12 starts.
Just like the MVP award of the UNH NIKE Fall Soccer Classic, Card shares this honor with Panos Georgiadis of Vermont, who scored two goals of his own over the weekend as Vermont defeated Quinnipiac, 2-0, and Iona, 3-1, to successfully defend the tournament title.
After the two victories over the weekend, New Hampshire (2-0) is now ranked fourth in New England in the latest NSCAA/adidas Regional Rankings, behind only Connecticut, Vermont, and Boston College.
UNH will next face the University of San Francisco (1-0), ranked 13th nationally by Soccer America. The match between the Wildcats and the Dons will take place as part of the Vermont Smith Barney/NIKE Soccer Classic in Burlington, Vt., on Friday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m.
