BOSTON - Petter Starnas tallied twice to lead the Northeastern Huskies to a 3-1 victory over the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team Sunday night at Parsons Field. UNH, which is battling for one of the last playoff spots in America East, dropped to 4-5-2 with the loss and 2-2-1 in league play. Northeastern improved to 8-3-0 and 4-1-0.
Starnas started the scoring at 17:00 of the first half when he scored off a penalty kick to give the Huskies an early 1-0 advantage. Northeastern made it 2-0 late in the first half on a goal by Nate Houghton. Starnas pushed the lead to 3-0 with his second goal of the game at 52:32.
UNH's only goal came from the head of sophomore Brendan Hankard (Glastonbury, Conn.). Back Doug Lawver (Doylestown, Pa.) assisted on the play. Anathanasios Kirkopoulos finished with two assists for Northeastern.
The Huskies controlled much of the action, outshooting the Wildcats, 21-6 and holding a 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. UNH goalkeeper Shaun O'Neil (Wrentham, Mass.) stopped seven Huskies' shots. NU goalie Allan Lewis needed to make just three saves in recording the win.
UNH returns to action Friday (10/19) when it hosts defending America East champion Vermont at Lewis Fields. Game time is 3 p.m.
