ORONO, MAINE - Sophomore Josh Hareld's (North Kingstown, R.I.) breakaway goal at 66:55 of the second half proved to be the game-winner as the UNH men's soccer team defeated the University of Maine, 2-1 Tuesday afternoon in Orono. The match marked the America East opener for both clubs.
Hareld (4-2-10) notched his team-leading fourth goal of the sseason when he took a feed from junior back Doug Lawver (Doylestown, Pa.), broke in alone on the Maine net and deposited his shot past Bears keeper Mat Cosgriff (six saves). It was Hareld's second point of the day and stretched his season-best point streak to three games.
Sophomore Nicholas Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) got UNH (3-3-1, 1-0-0) on the board with his first career goal at 5:17 of the first half. Maine (1-5-0, 0-1-0) countered on Greg Bajek's penalty kick at 42:44 to tie it at 1-1.
UNH outshot the Bears, 13-12 and outcornered them as well, 10-4. Wildcat netminder Shaun O'Neil recorded four saves to earn his third win of the year.
The Wildcats return to action Friday (10/5) when they host newcomer Stony Brook for the first time at Lewis Field. Kickoff time is 3:30 p.m.
