MEN'S SOCCER BESTS RHODE ISLAND 2-1 IN SPRING TUNEUP

KINGSTON, R.I. - Using goals from Nicola Chicco (Claymont, Del.) and David Barrett (Chicago, Ill.), the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team bested Rhode Island 2-1 Saturday to open the squad's 2002 spring schedule.

The match was knotted at 1 at halftime. Chicco opened the scoring to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead, with Josh McGeachey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) assisting. The Rams tied the game on a penalty kick goal later in the half.

Barrett scored on a feed from 2001 America East All-Rookie Team selection Logan Lee (Racine, Wis.) in the second half for the 2-1 advantage.

Mike Vignola (Hudson, N.H.) played the first half in net for the Wildcats and made several outstanding saves to keep the game tied. He gave way to Chad Green (Canyon, Texas) in the second half, who held URI scoreless.

Next weekend, UNH travels to Lowell, Mass., to square off with UMass-Lowell and the N.H. Phantoms in a pair of exhibition games on Saturday. On Sunday, April 21, the 'Cats will host Boston College and Dartmouth, with New Hampshire taking on the Eagles at 10:30 a.m. and the Big Green at 1 p.m.
