DURHAM, NH -- The 1999 America East preseason men's soccer poll was released today with UNH ranked seventh out of 10 teams.
After finishing fifth in America East last season and missing the Championship by a point, UNH returns 19 letterwinners, including eight starters. The top scorer from 1998, junior forward Adam Purcell (Barrington, R.I.), leads the offense. Last season, Purcell scored eight goals and added one assist en route to Second Team All-AMERICA EAST and All-New England honors.
Senior co-captain Brian Rosa (Portsmouth, R.I.) makes the transition from defense to midfield in his final season at UNH. He will split time at center midfield with senior co-captain Zach Zeldner (Glastonbury, Conn.).
Junior Drew Ferrigno (Southwick, Mass.) anchors the defense. Ferrigno provides two years of experience as a starter and provides offensive power as well. On Sunday at Singer Park, Manchester, Ferrigno scored the lone goal for the Wildcats in a 1-1 tie with New Hampshire College.
Senior Mitch Osman (Herndon, Va.) returns as the no. 1 netminder this season. Osman split starting duties the last three years with Ethan Holmes.
The Wildcats travel to Rhode Island Friday and then return home Wednesday, Sept. 1, to play UMass at 3:30 p.m.
