Clayton & Atkinson Record top-5 Scores in Ski Team's 3rd-place Finish at UVM
STOWE, Vt.– Zach Clayton (Manassas, Va.) took second place and Paul Atkinson (Toronto, Ontario) notched a fifth-place finish in the men's slalom, highlighting the UNH ski team's third-place overall finish at the Vermont Winter Carnival on Saturday afternoon. UVM won the carnival, followed by Dartmouth and then the 'Cats.
Vermont compiled 1,009 team points, Dartmouth registered 801.5 and UNH totaled 783.
Clayton was the top Cat, finishing runner-up in SL in 1 minute, 40.81 seconds. Atkinson's fifth-place time was 1:41.53. Other top performers for the Wildcats were Sam Coffey (Snowmass, Colo., 10th, 1:42.78) and Taylor Burton (Breckenridge, Colo., 15th, 1:44.47).
In the women's slalom race, Catherine Blanchard (Eastman, Quebec) posted an impressive time of 1:50.57 for third place, and Jacqueline Lebel (Truckee, Calif.) took 11th with a time of 1:54.21. Rounding out the notable UNH scores was Laura Rozinowicz (Toronto, Ontario), who finished 25th (2:04.05). UNH took third overall with 91 points, behind Williams (114) and Middlebury (103).
Three Wildcats posted top-10 finishes in the women's 5k freestyle race, as Tasha Kullas (Timmins, Ontario, 37 points, 15 minutes, 18 seconds), Clare Egan (35 points, 15:29) and Anya Caldwell Bean (Wolfeboro, N.H., 31 points, 15:36) spearheaded the Nordic team's 103 points by finishing sixth, eighth and 10th, respectively. UNH placed just behind second-place Dartmouth (109 points) and event winner Vermont (136).
Andrew Clemence (Falmouth, Maine) was the top performer for the men's Nordic team in the 10K free, earning 27 points by virtue of a 17th-place time of 27:47.3. The Wildcats tied Bowdoin for seventh place with 58 points, while Dartmouth won the event with 130.
The UNH ski team returns to action at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival on Friday, Feb. 11, and Saturday, Feb. 12. The alpine racing will take place at Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme Center, N.H., and the Nordic events are scheduled for Oak Hill in Hanover, N.H.
