WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward Kevin Goumas (Long Beach, N.Y.) was tabbed the Warrior Player of the Week while the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was feted as the Hockey East Team of the Week, announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
Goumas recorded five points (2g, 3a) on the weekend as the Wildcats swept 14th ranked Notre Dame. In Friday's 4-2 win, Goumas assisted on the first goal of the game for UNH and scored the game winner in the third period on a power play with under five minutes left in period. He notched his second assist of the night on the empty net goal late in the third. On Saturday, Goumas setup the game winning goal for the 'Cats that came during shorthanded play in the second period. He capped off the night with an empty net goal with 54 seconds left in the game. He finished the weekend with a +3 rating.
The men's hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Hockey East newcomer Notre Dame, who was ranked 14th in the nation coming into the weekend. After falling behind 1-0 to the Fighting Irish in the first game, the Wildcats answered with goals by Brett Pesce (Tarrytown, N.Y.) and Jeff Silengo (Madison, Conn.). After UND tied the game in the third period, Goumas recorded his first goal of the weekend on a power play, followed by an empty netter by Silengo to cap off the 4-2 victory. In Saturday's win, Maxim Gaudreault (Annapolis, Md.) got UNH on the board first, but Notre Dame tied the game before the end of the period. Dalton Speelman (San Jose, Calif.) regained the lead, but the Fighting Irish tied it again 10 minutes later. Matt Willows (Congers, N.Y.) responded the game-winning goal on a shorthanded play. In the third, Collin MacDonald (West Milford, N.J.) gave the 'Cats a 4-2 lead while Goumas notched an empty netter with 54 seconds left in the game for the 5-2 victory.
