Men's Hockey Returns to Action at Florida College Hockey Classic

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire men's hockey team is set to start the second half of the season as it will play at the Florida College Hockey Classic in a pair of games. The first game is slated for Saturday, Dec. 28 against No. 13/15 Cornell at 7:30 p.m. while the 'Cats will play the either Princeton or Maine on Sunday.

Wins vs. Losses: In the nine wins for the Wildcats this season, they have tallied 40 goals and 69 assists and are averaging 4.44 goals per game. The team has allowed just nine goals in the nine games, making 247 saves on 256 shots faced (.963 save percentage). On special teams, the team has only relinquished five power play goals to opponents.

In the nine losses, UNH has scored 19 goals and 34 assists, averaging 2.11 goals per game. They've allowed 36 goals and made saves on 199 shots of 234 faced (.850 save percentage). They've also allowed seven power play goals in those games.

Striking First: In the 10 Hockey East games played so far, the Wildcats have scored first eight of them. In 19 total games, UNH has scored the first goal in 13 of them.

Sorkin Soaring in 2013-14: After battling an injury and being limited to 29 games in 2012-13, Sorkin registered two goals and 15 assists for 17 points. In 2013-14, he already has 11 goals and nine assists for 20 points through 19 games played.
 
On the Road Again: The Wildcats will play their 11th and 12th road games of the season at the Florida College Classic. At home, they have played just eight games.

Maller back in the Sunshine State: Freshman blueliner Dylan Maller returns to his home state of Florida for the weekend series. The rookie hails from Parkland, Fla., which is just 125 miles from Estero.

UNH - Florida Everblades Connection: Former Wildcat John Henrion ('13) currently plays right wing for the Everblades after a stellar four-year career with the Wildcats.

About the College Classic: In 2000 Florida Everblades president and general manager Craig Brush decided to bring the excitement of Division I men's college hockey to Southwest Florida. Thus began the annual Florida College Classic at Germain Arena. Every December hockey fans in Southwest Florida have the opportunity to watch some of the top NCAA men's hockey teams, such as the University of Maine, Cornell University, University of New Hampshire and Boston College. 30 Million and Counting: Flying out of Logan International Airport, the Wildcats are the 30-millionth customers of the year. A brief presentation will be Friday morning held by Aviation Director for Massport and former UNH hockey player, Ed Freni ('72-'74).

All in the Family:  Sophomore defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk is the younger brother of former Wildcat and current Toronto Maple Leaf forward James van Riemsdyk. Associate Head Coach Jim Tortorella is the brother of Vancouver head coach John Tortorella.

'Cats Selected in the NHL Draft: Two current UNH players have been selected in the National Hockey League draft. Eric Knodel (Toronto) and Brett Pesce (Carolina) have been drafted. Jay Camper is the younger brother of Bruins' prospect and former Miami University star Carter Camper.

UNH on the Radio:  In 2013-14, UNH athletics is proud to annouce the largest network ever to broadcast UNH sporting events. The Wildcat Sports Radio Network is made up of 10 stations with blanketing coverage across the state. Dan Parkhurst will be handling the play-by-play for the seventh straight season, while Pete Webster will once again be doing the color commentating. Webster has been announcing Wildcat hockey since the 1993-94 season.

Granite State Connection: The Wildcat hockey team features three players from New Hampshire with Collin Bourque (Goffstown) Ryan Randall (Durham) and Casey DeSmith (Rochester) all hailing from the Granite State.

'Cats Picked Third in Preseason Coaches' Poll: The University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was voted third, along with Notre Dame, in the Hockey East Association Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was announced Tuesday during the league's annual media day at Legends Restaurant in the TD Garden.The Wildcats, who racked up 84 points, have been picked third in two out of the last three preseason polls and finished in the top three in Hockey East five of the last seven seasons, including three regular-season titles.
