WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Junior netminder Casey DeSmith (Rochester, N.H.) of the 20th-ranked University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference Monday. It is the first time this season and sixth in his career he has earned the distinction.
DeSmith backboned the Wildcats to a home-and-home weekend sweep of Northeastern, posting a 3-0 road shutout victory Friday and a 4-1 win at home on Saturday. At Matthews Arena, the Granite State native made saves on all 22 shots faced for his first shutout performance of the season and followed it up with a 31-save effort in Saturday's win. On the weekend, he made 53 saves on 54 shots for a save percentage of .981 and a goals against average of 0.50.
The Wildcats return to the ice for a two-game away series at Providence College, beginning Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. with a pregame show on the Wildcat Sports Radio Network at 6:30 p.m.
