Men's Hockey Picked Third in Hockey East Preseason Coaches' Poll

BOSTON The University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team was voted third, along with Notre Dame, in the Hockey East Association Preseason Coaches’ Poll, which was announced Tuesday during the league’s annual media day at Legends Restaurant in the TD Garden.

The Wildcats, who racked up 84 points, have been picked third in two out of the last three preseason polls and finished in the top three in Hockey East five of the last seven seasons, including three regular-season titles.

UNH returns with an abundance of talent from the 2012-13 squad, which includes junior goaltender Casey DeSmith (Rochester, N.H.), who had a career year for the Wildcats with 1,000 saves on 1,082 shots in 38 games. Other top returners include junior Trevor van Riemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.), who garnered the Rod Langway
Best Defenseman Award last season, and senior defenseman Eric Knodel (Westchester, Pa.), the team captain.

New Hampshire opens the 2013-14 campaign Saturday, Oct. 5 in an exhibition matchup against Acadia University. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Whittemore Center.
