Ayers, Callander earn Hockey East honors

WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Preston Callander (Regina, Sask.) and Mike Ayers (Hingham, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire hockey team were named CCM Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, by Hockey East on Monday. Both players were named to the Dodge Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the tourney on Sunday.

Callander, a junior forward, scored three of UNH’s five goals in games against Miami and Minnesota at last weekend’s Dodge Holiday Classic at the University of Minnesota. Callander matched his career high of two goals with a pair of tallies against Minnesota as he pulled UNH within one goal, 3-2, with consecutive scores in the second and third periods. He also potted a goal against Miami in New Hampshire’s 3-0 victory.

Ayers, a senior goaltender, stopped 60 of 64 shots in two games for a .938 save percentage and a 2.01 GAA. He matched his career high of 44 saves against Minnesota; he established that benchmark Oct. 19, 2002 vs. Minnesota. Ayers also achieved a personal milestone Saturday vs. Miami when he became the sixth UNH goaltender to reach 2,000 career saves with the sixth of his 16 saves.

UNH (11-6-2 overall, 5-3-2 HE) returns to action Jan. 3 at home against Yale University. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.
