DURHAM, N.H. - Sean Austin (Malden, Mass.) and Johnny Rogers (Etobicoke, Ont.) both netted a goal and assisted on another to lead the fifth-ranked University of New Hampshire men's hockey team to Friday night's 4-1 Hockey East victory against Northeastern University at the Whittemore Center. UNH improved to 16-4-5 overall and 7-2-4 in the conference while NU is now 8-10-3, 3-7-3.
Rogers gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 6:13 of the first period when Jeff Haydar (Milton, Ont.) made a centering pass from behind the net and Rogers fired a high wrist shot into the net. Austin was also credited with an assist on the tally.
David Busch (Toronto, Ont.) extended UNH's lead to 2-0 at 14:57. Garrett Stafford (Los Angeles, Calif.) initiated the play with a two-line pass that sent Busch alone into the offensive zone, where he cut into the slot from the right circle and beat NU goalie Mike Gilhooly (28 saves) from close range.
The Huskies trimmed the deficit to 2-1 at 10:59 of the middle stanza when Chris Lynch scored an unassisted, wraparound goal. UNH regained a two-goal lead, 3-1, on a Mark White (Woburn, Mass.) power-play goal at 16:57.
With UNH's Lanny Gare serving a slashing major at the beginning of the third period, Northeastern attempted 11 shots, but only one was on net during the five-minute power play. The Wildcats gained momentum from its successful penalty kill and extended their advantage to 4-1 on an Austin tally at 10:08.
New Hampshire's Ty Conklin (Anchorage, Alaska) finished with 24 saves.
New Hampshire and Northeastern complete the home-and-home series Saturday night at Matthews Arena. The game, which begins at 7 p.m., will be televised by Fox Sports Net New England.
