UNH MEN'S ICE HOCKEY HOLDS ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET

DURHAM. N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire men's ice hockey team held its annual awards banquet Saturday at the Whittemore Center Arena.

In addition to the annual awards, the Captains for the 2000-01 season were announced. Junior goaltender Ty Conklin (Anchorage, Alaska) was named captain of next year's squad with junior forward Corey-Joe Ficek (Bedford, N.H.) and junior defenseman Mark White (Woburn, Mass.) serving as assistant captains. Conklin becomes the first goalie captain at UNH since Rod Blackburn guided the 1960-61 squad.

Conklin, a 2000 Hobey Baker Memorial award finalist, also earned the Roger LeClerc Award as the team's Most Valuable Player this past season. Sophomore Darren Haydar (Milton, Ontario) and David Busch (Toronto, Ontario) were the only multiple award-winners. Haydar earned the Guy Smith Award as the Best Offensive player and the Ted Karmeris Award as the team's most exciting player. Busch took home the Sid Knight Award for the best grade-point average on the team and the Most Improved Player Award.

Other award winners included senior Dan Enders (Madison, Wisc.) as Best Defenseman; Mike Souza (Wakefield, Mass.) as the Charles E. Holt Coaches Award winners; John Sadowski (Glenview, Ill.) earned the Warren Brown Award as the top defensive forward and seniors Tim Walsh (Concord, N.H.) and Jason Shipulski (Saugus, Mass.) received the Robert Kullen Award as the team's unsung heros.
