Okeke scores 13 points in men's basketball's 62-48 loss to Dartmouth
DURHAM, N.H. – Frank Okeke (DeSoto, Texas) poured in a team-leading 13 points, but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team suffered a 62-48 setback Wednesday night against Dartmouth College at Lundholm Gym.
The Wildcats opened the game on a 4-0 run. Williams Gabriel (Lagos, Nigeria) got the scoring started when he hit a layup on a pass from Jacoby Armstrong (Sachse, Texas). Armstrong extended the lead to for UNH when he hit a jumper from the right shoulder.
Dartmouth quickly responded with an 11-0 run to take its first lead of the game. Tyler Melville got the Big Green on the board when he buried a three-pointer from the top of the key. After Connor Boehm notched a layup, Melville added another three-pointer to put Dartmouth up 8-4. Brandon McDonnell capped the run for Dartmouth when he hit a three-ball from the left corner.
The Wildcats answered with six-straight points of their own. Scott Morris (Walkersville, Md.) brought UNH within four points when he hit a three-ball from the top of the key. Patrick Konan (Gainesville, Fla.) notched his first three of the game to cut the lead to one.
After the teams traded baskets to make it 13-12, Dartmouth, the Big Green launched an 8-0 run to jump ahead 21-12. One free-throw from McDonnell and two from Melville put the Big Green up four, before Gabas Maldunas hit a layup. Alex Mitola gave ended the run and gave the Big Green a nine-point lead when he scored a three.
UNH closed the half on a 13-6 run to cut the lead to 27-25 at the break. Okeke buried three three-pointers in the span to lead the comeback.
Okeke had nine points at the break to lead the Wildcats. Melville and Boehm each scored eight points in the first half to pace the Big Green.
UNH took the lead during the first possession of the second half. Konan beat two defenders to score a bucket in the lane and draw a foul. He hit the free-throw to put the Wildcats up 28-27.
Dartmouth quickly responded with a 12-0 run to regain control of the game. Mitola started things off for Dartmouth when he notched a three-ball from the right corner. Boehm added two free-throws before Melville buried his third three-pointer of the night to put Dartmouth up seven. Maldunas and Boehm added buckets to cap the run and give the Big Green an 11-point edge.
The Big Green would hold the lead for the rest of the game, extending the advantage to 16 at one point, and eventually defeating the Wildcats 48-62.
Melville finished with a game-high 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Boehm (14 points) and Maldunas (12 points) also scored in double-digits for Dartmouth, who moves to 5-4 with the victory.
Okeke finished with a team-high 13 points for UNH. Konan also scored in double digits, adding 12 points for the Wildcats. Junior Tommy McDonnell (Durham, N.H.) collected a team-high four rebounds and scored two points for UNH who fell to 2-8 on the year.
