Konan Records Double-Double, but Men’s Basketball edged at No. 25 Marquette, 58-53

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. -- Senior forward Patrick Konan (Gainesville, Fla.) drained 14 points and came down with 10 rebounds as the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team was edged by a score of 58-53 on the road at No. 25 Marquette at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisc.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-2 on the year while the Golden Eagles improve to 3-1.

Pelcher gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead to start the game 1:27 into the first half, but Marquette's Chris Otule responded with a pair of buckets to gain the lead for the Golden Eagles. MU would go on a 10-0 run before New Hampshire's John Edwards (Charlotte, N.C.) was fouled on a drive to the basket. He drained one of the two ensuing free throws to make the score 10-3.

Down by 14 with 10:19 left in the first half, the Wildcats offense was sparked by a three-pointer by freshman Daniel Dion (Cedar Park, Texas). Dion pulled up with a jumper with 5:47 left in the first half to give him five points off the bench. Jacoby Armstrong (Sachse, Texas) fueled a 10-4 New Hampshire run with four points for the Wildcats to pull within seven at the end of the half. With the first stanza in the books, Marquette led, 25-18. The defensively sound Wildcat squad held the Golden Eagles to 8-of-29 shooting in the first half and to just 1-of-12 from three point land.

Just 17 seconds into the first half, senior Konan was fouled on his way to the basket to earn a pair of free throws, both of which he sank. After a pair of Marquette buckets, Edwards notched a layup. He drove the lane and gathered his own rebound to convert the attempt.

The Golden Eagles endured a 5-0 run until the Wildcats responded with a quick five of their own. With 13:35 left on the clock, Konan gathered the rebound of a shot by Armstrong for the tip-in. 28 seconds later, Jordon Bronner (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) drilled an attempt from outside the arc to cut Marquette's lead to eight at 35-27.

Edwards added a pair of points on two foul shots while Dion drained his second three-pointer of the night to give him eight on the night. Konan also hit a pair of free throw attempts in the span. With 6:11 left in the half, Konan drained a three pointer that was answered by Marquette's Jake Thomas. Bronner nailed his second three pointer of the half, but Marquette again answered with a conversion from behind the arc by Thomas.

With 2:39 remaining, Konan sunk his second three pointer of the night to bring New Hampshire within eight. After Otule made one of his two free throws, Konan notched a pair of points on a layup while Bronner hit a clutch three pointer to bring UNH to within four points with 43 seconds left. The score was 53-49.

Todd Mayo hit a pair of free throws with 42 seconds left on the clock, but Bronner sank a fhree thrown to bring the game within five at 55-50. Mayo converted 1-of-2 free throws as he was fouled as Jamil Wilson did the same thing. Dion charged down the court with the final seconds ticking on the clock and drained an off balance three point shot. The Wildcats quickly fouled Wilson to bring him to the line and he made 1-of-2. Bronner rushed down the court with the clock running out and pulled up for a shot, but it was just off target. At the end of the game, Marquette held on to win, 58-53.
