BALTIMORE – The University of New Hampshire gymnastics team has been selected fifth in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) preseason poll, announced Monday. The votes were conducted among the eight league head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
The Wildcats, 2003 EAGL champions, earned 36 points in the preseason poll. The University of Maryland, with 62 points, headlined the poll and garnered five first-place votes. Defending EAGL champion North Carolina State University (58 points; three first-place votes) was selected second. The University of North Carolina and the University of Pittsburgh (37) finished ahead of the Wildcats by one point for a tie of third place. Rounding out the poll, positions 6-8 are occupied by George Washington University (29), Rutgers University (20) and Towson University (9), respectively.
The UNH gymnastics team finished the 2012-13 season ranked 41st nationally with a 194.810 Regional Qualifying Score (RQS), an overall record of 17-7.
The Wildcats open league competition at Rutgers on Saturday, Jan. 11. The meet begins at 1 p.m. in Livingston Gym.
The 2014 EAGL Championship will be hosted by UNH and takes place Saturday, March 22, at the Whittemore Center, starting at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.unhwildcats.com or call (603) 862-4000, extension 5.
