INDIANAPOLIS--The University of New Hampshire women’s gymnastics team, ranked 35th in the nation this week, earned a bid today to compete in the NCAA University Park Gymnastics Regional to be held at Penn State on Sat., April 10. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. in Rec Hall.
This will mark the 28th time that the Wildcats have advanced to an NCAA Regional under head coach Gail Goodspeed.
Six teams, five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual event specialist per event [who has a minimum Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.4] were named to each of the six regions.
The top 18 teams were seeded on a national basis, based on RQS. Teams 19-36 were assigned to a regional site based on geographic proximity. All-around competitors and event specialists were assigned within their respective regions.
Looking at the University Park Regional. Oklahoma is the No. 1 seed, followed by No. 2 LSU, No. 3 Penn State, No. 4 Maryland, No. 5 Ohio State and No. 6 UNH. Oklahoma enters the week ranked No. 2 in the nation, followed by LSU at No. 11, Penn State at No. 14, Maryland at No. 33, Ohio State at No. 34 and UNH at No. 35.
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Gainesville, Florida, April 22-24, hosted by the University of Florida.
In addition, the event winners at the regional championships will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
The Wildcats completed the 2010 regular season with a 12-3 overall record and recorded a season-high score of 195.2 at Texas Woman’s University. The team also placed fourth at the EAGL Championship, which was held at Lundholm Gym on March 27.
Tickets are on sale now for the NCAA Regional at Penn State. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youth and students and groups of 20 or more. Tickets will also be on sale at the door the day of the event. For additional ticket information, please call 814-865-5555.
