PITTSBURGH, Pa.--- Two University of New Hampshire gymnasts were honored Tuesday by the East Atlantic Gymnastics League conference. Freshman Beth Bronson (Jacksonville, Fla.) earned the Rookie of the Week title, and junior Mariana Peña Trestini (Valencia, Venezuela) received the Specialist of the Week accolade in the gymnasts' first conference recognition of the year.
Bronson earned the Rookie of the Week title for her solid performances in UNH's 195.125-193.85 victory over North Carolina State on Saturday. Bronson received season-high scores of 9.8 on the uneven bars and 9.775 on beam to earn the recognition. The award is given to gymnasts who make an impact on their team's performance in their first year of competition.
Peña Trestini received the Specialist of the Week title for contributions of her own. She tied the near-perfect school record for floor exercise with a 9.975, a record that was set this year by junior Amanda Hall (Bremerton, Wash.). Peña Trestini also shared the first-place title in the uneven bar competition with her season-high score of 9.875. This is not the first time in her career that Peña Trestini earned Specialist of the Week. She received the award three times in the 2004 season.
Bronson and Peña Trestini join the growing list of Wildcat honorees. This season, Hall and freshman Rebekah Porter (Valparaiso, Ind.) were both honored twice by the conference for their own outstanding performances.
The Wildcats return to action Sat. Feb. 25 at Missouri at 7 p.m. for the annual Cat Classic. The 'Cats will return home Sat. March 19 at 7 p.m. to host Towson and Brown in the Lundholm Gymnasium. The meet is the last regular season event at home this year and will honor the senior gymnasts.
