DURHAM, N.H. --- Freshman gymnast Rebekah Porter (Valparaiso, Ind.) earned the first-ever Rookie of the Week accolade given by the East Atlantic Gymnastics League on Tuesday. In her first collegiate meet, Porter earned scores of 9.7 on bars and 9.8 on floor to lift the University of New Hampshire Wildcats over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Sunday, 191.6-190.825.
Before coming to UNH, Porter was Level 10 State, Regional, and National Qualifier. In 2002, Porter also competed in the Costa Rican National Championships, where she was first in all events, and in 2001, earned 11th place in the all-around competition of the US Challenge.
Porter has also had several academic achievements as a member of the National Honor Society at Valparaiso High School, earning highest honors. In 2003, she was also the recipient of the State Mental Attitude award.
Porter earned the first Rookie of the Week award ever given by EAGL. The award was created to honor younger gymnasts who make strong contributions to their team in their first collegiate year of action.
Porter and the Wildcats return to action Sunday as they take on Rhode Island and Yale in Kingston, R.I. at 1 p.m. The 'Cats come back to UNH's Lundholm Gymnasium on Jan. 22 at 7p.m. to face Brigham Young University.
