BOSTON - The University of New Hampshire field hockey team, which finished with a 12-8 overall record a year ago and won a share of the league regular-season title, was selected second in the America East preseason coaches poll that was released Wednesday.
UNH, with 28 points, placed behind Northeastern University (34 points; six first-place votes) in the voting. The University of Maine (26), Boston University (24; one), University of Vermont (16), University at Albany (11) and newcomer University of Maryland, Baltimore County (six) complete the poll in the seven-team league.
The Wildcat offense will be led by senior captain Jen Stamp (Tyngsboro, Mass.), a Northeast Region First Team selection in 2002 who ranked second on the team in goals (12), assists (eight) and points (32), and 2002 America East Rookie of the Year Katie White (Glens Falls, N.Y.). The defensive unit is anchored by senior Courtney Goodwin (Lynnfield, Mass.) and junior Brittany Schneider (Middletown, Md.), as well as junior goalkeeper Christine Buckley (Walpole, Mass.).
UNH features four players from the Granite State, including senior goalkeeper Julie Munson (Dover) and junior forward Heidi Anderson (Hampton Falls, N.H.). Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Skelley (Wolfeboro) and freshman back Amber Green (New Durham) reunite as teammates; the pair played together at Kingswood Regional High School.
New Hampshire opens the 2003 season Aug. 30 (1 p.m.) against the University of Maryland at the University of Massachusetts. The Wildcats' first home game at Memorial Field is Sept. 1 (1 p.m.) vs. Northwestern University.
