DAVIDSON, N.C. – University of New Hampshire senior defensive back Steven Thames (Fort Washington, Md.) was named to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS Defensive Back Award watch list on Monday, June 2.
The list comprises 38 returning defensive backs that are competing for the CFPA award as the one who increases the overall effectiveness of their team the most within the Football Championships Subdivision.
In the past season, Thames saw action in 14 of 15 games while having a team best four interceptions for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Thames finished the season in the team's Top 10 for tackles and finished second regarding break-up passes. The 6-foot-0, 187-pound defensive back finished in the Top 10 in interceptions, passes defended, interception return yards, and interceptions returned for a touchdown within CAA conference games. Throughout all games (including non-conference) Thames finished first for interceptions returned for a touchdown with two.
Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. Thames posted an outstanding performance against the University of Rhode Island (Oct. 12) when he had a total of four solo tackles and broke up a pass. In the fourth quarter, Thames intercepted a pass and returned it for 11 yards and a touchdown (his first of the season). Contributions on defense as well as in the scoring column helped the Wildcats defeat the Rams, 59-19.
In the NCAA FCS semifinal game against North Dakota State, Thames returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown giving UNH a 7-0 lead just minutes into the game. Thames helped UNH contend with North Dakota State in the Wildcats' first NCAA FCS semifinal appearance in the history of the program.
After ending a record breaking 2013 campaign, the University of New Hampshire Wildcats open the 2014 season Saturday, August 20 (time TBA) at University of Toledo.
