Football's Harris Wins N.E. Gold Helmet Award
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –Junior wide receiver R.J. Harris (Odenton, Md.) of the 23rd-ranked University of New Hampshire football team was named Wednesday as the Ray Gallant Insurance New England Football Writers' Gridiron Club of Boston Gold Helmet Award recipient for the week of Nov. 11. Harris' acknowledgement was announced at the campus of Harvard University on Wednesday.
Harris received recognition for his exceptional comeback performance in UNH's 33-17 victory over the then-No. 22 James Madison on Nov. 9. Harris came back strong after returning from a three-game injury break with a career-best three touchdowns as part of his 10 catches for 183 yards. Harris improved to the No. 6 rank in all-time receptions (170) and No. 8 in all-time receiving yards (2,210) at UNH.
Harris took full advantage of opportunities early in the game starting with executing an 18-yard touchdown reception from Andy Vailas (Bedford, N.H.) at 12:50 of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Harris' reception of a 52-yard halfback option pass from Nico Steriti (Toms River, N.J.) staked the Wildcatds to a 14-0 lead. Harris struck again in the third quarter on a 7-yard pass from Vailas to mark his career-best third touchdown.
Harris' outstanding performance also earned him the FCS Wide Receiver of the Week by College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) on Monday afternoon.
UNH, which earned its fourth win in five games, improved to 5-4 on the season and 4-2 in the CAA. The Wildcats travel to Albany (1-9, 0-6) to play their final road game of the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 3:30 pm.
