CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore quarterback Sean Goldrich (West Haven, Conn.) of the 20th-ranked University of New Hampshire football team was feted Wednesday as the Ray Gallant Insurance New England Football Writers' Gridiron Club of Boston Gold Helmet Award recipient for the week of Oct. 21.
Wednesday's announcement on the campus of Harvard University followed Goldrich's outstanding performance in the Wildcats' come-from-behind 29-28 upset victory against then-No. 12 Villanova on Oct. 19. The signal caller, who made his second straight start, matched a career high with 21 completions (in 28 attempts), threw for 236 yards and accounted for three touchdowns –two rushing, one passing. He even made his first career catch on a 15-yard pass from Jared Allison (Cliffwood, N.J.).
Goldrich scored on a 6-yard scamper with 8:13 left in the third quarter to draw the 'Cats within 14-12, and he hooked up with Allison for an 8-yard scoring pass that capped a 14-play, 99-yard drive that staked UNH to a 21-14 advantage with 5:03 left in the fourth quarter. He saved his best for last when he orchestrated a 50-yard drive in the final 1:02 of regulation, and he improvised on a broken play to score on a 4-yard keeper with 14 seconds left.
UNH, which improved to 25-2 in its last 27 home games, registered its second straight victory to up its record to 3-3, 2-1 in the CAA. The Wildcats travel to Stony Brook (3-3, 1-2) for a league matchup against the Seawolves on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 4 p.m.
