Cowell Stadium to Undergo Renovation for 2014 Football Season

DURHAM, N.H. – Repairs and structural improvements to Cowell Stadium at the University of New Hampshire for the 2014 football season will make it possible for the team to play night games and bid for lucrative NCAA playoff games as well as benefit youth athletes from across the state.

The renovation will include the addition of stadium lights, replacement of the general admission stands, and re-orientation of concrete stadium seating and aisle ways. There has never been a night game played at Cowell Stadium during its 77-year history.

"As a graduate and former UNH football player, I am committed to supporting opportunities to make our state flagship institution more accessible to residents of all ages in the state," said Senator Lou D'Allesandro. "I'm pleased that along with my colleagues, we were able to bring lights to Cowell Stadium."

Cowell Stadium, originally constructed in 1936, is the home of the UNH football program as well as lacrosse, soccer, and track & field. In addition it is used for special events like Special Olympics and the CHAD All-Star High School Football Game.

"The lights will allow us to extend the use of the stadium to better allow us to serve the state and its constituency," said UNH Athletic Director Marty Scarano. "For example, we hope to soon host many of the NHIAA outdoor championships to include the three football championships."

Scarano added that the repairs and structural improvements are phase one of a future expansion and complete build-out of the stadium site, and athletics is actively seeking funds to continue work.

"There is something special about football under the lights, and we're excited that we'll soon be able to give our kids the opportunity to experience that unique atmosphere in front of our fans at Cowell Stadium," said UNH Head Football Coach Sean McDonnell.

The Wildcat football team, which owns a national best nine-year streak of consecutive NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) postseason appearances, will play host to Colgate on Saturday, Sept. 14, on Welcome Back 'Cat Pack and Kids' Day at Cowell Stadium.
