PHILADELPHIA – University of New Hampshire senior linebacker Matt Evans (Hanover, Mass.) was named to The Sports Network FCS Preseason All-America First Team, and junior offensive lineman Ricky Archer (The Plains, Va.) was tabbed to the Preseason All-America Third Team, it was announced Monday.
Evans, the 2011 Buck Buchanan Award winner as the national defensive player of the year, led the country with 7.67 solo tackles/game and ranked second nationally with 165 total stops, the second-most in UNH single-season history, last season. The 6-foot, 226-pound middle linebacker, who was feted as a Beyond Sports Network Preseason All-American in June, garnered numerous accolades last season: Walter Camp Football Foundation All-American; Phil Steele's All-America First Team; The Sports Network/Fathead.com All-America; College Sports Madness All-American; CFPA Elite Linebacker Award; BSN National Defensive Player of the Year; Gold Helmet Award as New England's FCS player of the year; All-CAA First Team; All-New England Team and the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award.
Archer, who earned BSN Preseason All-American Second-Team recognition last month, has started 18 games over the past two seasons, including all 12 contests a year ago. The 6-foot-2, 278-pound right guard was tabbed to the FCS All-New England Team and the All-CAA Second Team last season after helping anchor the front line for the league's top-ranked passing offense (274.7 yards/game), No. 3-ranked scoring offense (32.8 points/game) and third-ranked total offense (427.8 yards/game).
