MURPHY NAMED ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF MEDIA & PUBLIC RELATIONS

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire athletic department announced Monday that Mike Murphy has been hired as an Associate Director of Media & Public Relations. He will begin the position July 1.

“We are extremely excited to be adding Mike Murphy to our media and public relations staff,” Assistant Athletic Director for Media & Public Relations Tom Wilkins said. “Mike is a well respected member of the New Hampshire media community. His knowledge in the field and passion for UNH athletics make him a perfect fit for our office.”

Murphy, a five-time New Hampshire Sportscaster of the Year (1998, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009), has served as a sports announcer on the UNH Sports Network since 1998. He is the color commentator for all UNH football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball radio broadcasts and has also done work as the play-by-play announcer for Wildcat women’s ice hockey and men’s ice hockey games. Last year, Murphy also hosted the weekly UNH Coach’s Show with football head coach Sean McDonnell and men’s hockey head coach Dick Umile.

“I am excited to become a member of the UNH Athletic Media and Public Relations Team,” Murphy said.  “I thank Marty Scarano, Dot Sheehan and Tom Wilkins for offering me this opportunity, and I look forward to working with the great staff assembled here in promoting Wildcats’ sports.”

Since 2007, Murphy has been the Director of Media Relations and Ticket Sales Executive for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, which is the Toronto Blue Jays’ Double-A affiliate located in Manchester. In that media relations role, he wrote press releases and game notes, supervised press conferences, served as media liaison between Toronto’s prospects, front office and Fisher Cats’ front office, and helped maintain the team’s website.

Murphy, feted as the 2008 New Hampshire Association of Broadcasters Air Personality of the Year, has also been part of the Fisher Cats Radio Network broadcast team since the minor league baseball team's inception in 2004. He was also bestowed the 2008 AP Top Play-by-Play Award and is a 12-time recipient of the NHAB Golden Mike Award.

Murphy joined the Fisher Cats’ front office in a full-time capacity as a Ticket Sales Account Executive in January 2006 following more than a decade of radio experience in the Granite State.

Murphy played a significant role as part of the Fisher Cats’ front office that was awarded the prestigious 2009 Double-A Bob Freitas Award by Baseball America in recognition for achieving long-term success in Minor League Baseball.

Murphy is a graduate of Syracuse University, where he earned a degree in Broadcast Journalism in 1995. He is an active member of his community, serving as an Associate Board Member at the Concord Boys & Girls Club and as a volunteer coach for the Concord Parks and Recreation Department.

Mike married his wife, Tish, in May 1995. They live in Concord with their children Katie (12) and Jason (8).
